Once again attention should be brought to the fact that many businesses are not taking their intellectual property seriously enough to give it the kind of management that it deserves. But the flipside of this situation is also that many business owners do not know what to do with their intellectual property assets. Many time businesses have more information in store than they actually need. For example, your business might have created a product which is not on sale anymore. Can you dispose off that product and all the research that goes along with it or would you keep it in store for future use? That is a tough call to make and more often than not, businesses chose to store this kind of information. But keep in mind that the maintenance and storage of this information does drive up costs. It is difficult for any company to dispose of material that they have invested time, effort and money into but in some situations that might be the best step to take especially if that information is not going to be used in the future.

Of course, another option you have is to sell information that you do not need but is still valuable to another business who might want that kind of information. Of course, there are issues of trademarks and patents that come into the picture that you will need to work out.

If your business is one that deals with intellectual property then it is very important that sufficient measures are taken in order to protect this most valuable asset. Managing intellectual property might be difficult, especially for small businesses, but it is an extremely important task.
